I use flash very little but still have need of one. I what an good full function alternative flash unit that's not so expensive as 580. Will be using with 60D and maby a used 1D MK IIn in near future. Your suggestions are needed and welcome.
You say "full function" but that can have a few different interpretations...do you mean Full ETTL II or other functions too? Personally, I think the 430EXII is a fantastic flash...very powerful and has all the features of the bigger speedlites except the RF remote, external high voltage port, and master control. The 380EX is more compact (albeit a little less powerful) yet offering most features of the 430 but with an LED video light added. All these speedlites offer on-camera control via the 60D's menu. The 270/220/90 series don't have BOTH bounce & swivel which makes them less desirable for me but are the most compact choices that still have a (mostly) full set of features. I am not a fan of 3rd party speedlites for Canon unless you use them in 'strobist manual' mode.

Can you tell us what you'll be using the flash for? That way we can be of better service to you. For instance: do you want to:
- just put the flash on the camera and shoot when there's not enough light?
- use the flash off-camera with full ETTL-II support?
- use multiple flashes in manual mode for studio work or on-location fill in flash?
etc.
I have 380Ex. Nice flash needs cord because it doesn't swivel. No manual except full power. Has high speed for shutter speeds over 1/250. Also have 540 ez which I like. Really nice manual flash. Easy to get pc adapter thing if you need that
