if you have a grip then 6fps is available (with different battery)...that is the only positive I have experienced (using 1.5 crop) but for action that might make a difference.

I have shot basketball with different bodies including the D7000 and the D3, not yet the D800. I would assume it should be more than ok. You'll need high ISO, I typically shoot between 3200 and 6400 to freeze the action with fast lenses like a 85 1.8 and the 70-200VR. I don't really see a need for fast fps, I focus on getting the right shot, not on bringing back thousands of impossible to sort pictures. I use bursts for static shots (team after the game to avoid people blinking among others)
