Hi all,
This is my first post here, but I've been around for a couple months. Love the community! You all are great!
Anyway, I'm wondering what would cause something like this to happen to an image?
Was using a Canon 20D with a SanDisk 8GB CF card.
Any thoughts would be appreciated as I've never had this happen before...

This was my first shoot with that card, so I'm sad about that. Just bought it brand new from Amazon last week. I might have to call up SanDisk about it... can't have it failing in the middle of a shoot.

just by reading the title of the the thread I had a good idea of what the image was going to look like
this comes up lots of times.
the usual culprits are
1: bad card
2: Bad card reader
3: Bad communication between body and card.
number 1 is the usual by a long way and number 2 some is sometimes .
you can reformat the card (on the PC) and try again. but you will always have the thought in the back of your mend that it will happen again.
I've had it 3 times (different cards)
the first was at a friends wedding . only 1 image corrupted and i was shooting RAW+Jpeg . (the RAW was like that and the Jpeg was fine). the card dies completely a month later.
the other 2 times the cards have been fine afterwards but I now only use them as emergency cards . they are only 4 and 8 gig anyway. I have a 32 and 16 gig pair as my main cards

To Ian's comments I would add my experience with #3. This happened to me intermittently with a new, fast (expensive) CF card that I bought with my 7D. The 7D is long gone and I kept the card, using it now in my 1D3 without any issues whatsoever. Baffling at the time...

Unfortunately, you took your memory card out in brilliant sunlight and light got in past the seals. The bytes have been blown out and the card will have to be reformatted.

Seriously now, another culprit can be taking the card out while the camera is still writing. Let the blinking activity light go out and then switch the camera off before removing the card.
Another culprit can be formatting the card outside of the camera.

And yes Monito, I think you found the culprit: light getting past the seals in the card! :P haha!
But in reply to the serious side, I can rule out both of those for me: I had the card in and shooting for about another 45 minutes after that shot with no further problem, and I always format in-camera. Thank you for the ideas!
