The 2012 US OPEN of Surfing @ Surf City (Huntington Beach), Ca. kicked off Saturday with an estimate of 55,000 people showing up on the opening day. The morning started off a little nippy with an onshore wind but photogs and the likes doesn't mind the weather at all as they're busy clicking away to get those aerial shots of the surfers. Swell is @ 1-3 ft and expected to increase in time for the finals this coming weekend.
Anyways, sharing y'all from Sunday's shootout. These were shot with a 1DMKII + 400 F2.8L MKII + 1.4xII. <(*.*)> Enjoy...
Nice stuff! Thinking of heading down there Fri/Sat as soon as my CPS loan for a 400mm 2.8L comes in.
Do those with media credentials get to be closer to the action? Or is there a lot of open space on the beach etc? I might be getting credentials but haven't received confirmation yet...
400mm f2.8L just come! time to drive down to LA tonight, and then go to Huntington Beach in the am!
Any suggestions, tips etc? For those shooting with the 400, are you using a monopod or tripod? How early should I arrive (7:30am? earlier?). Maybe I'll see some of you out there!
Only quickly went through my shots before sending them into the paper I regularly shoot for, but here's a slideshow of some of 'em! Will probably post some when I get the time since the slideshows are so tiny on the site... But in the meantime!
Way to go! I saw the beach shot and people where from the street into the water Freakin crazy packed. Where did you shoot from the beach the pier? I really wanted to go but had way too much stuff going on that weekend. I always say next year but never go.
I take it that you're the Patrick that I met down there on Saturday. Nice shots. I've been busy and haven't had time to do anything with my images except to get them off my cards onto my HDD. Didn't et to go out on Sunday to the finals. Looked like it was great on sunday from what I saw in the newspaper.

I tend to move around but prefer shooting at beach level to create a different perspective.

^^ Hi Ken...Yes, it was me that you met over the weekend. I just emailed a few candids snaps of you earlier. Yeah, Sunday's final event as expected is huge. I've been shooting the US OPEN for a few years now and only this year that I tried shooting at beach level close to the surfers to create a different perspective. All of these are not cropped simply because I'm just almost right there with them. That's how close I was to these fellas. I enjoyed it a lot even though I'm completely drenched. I decided not to bring the beastly 400 F2.8L MKII as it's so heavy to lug it around.
Shot with a 1DMKII + 300 F4L IS + 1.4xII...hope y'all enjoy!
