Question. My 85 1.4G is also soft at 1.4 and f/2.0 Only at f/4.0 do I feel it's sharp. When someone earlier said bring it in for calibration .. would this be futile if it's still not very sharp using Live View focusing / tripod / MUP / delay?

it should be spot on sharp with liveview... if it isn't then you should send it to nikon to have it recalibrated...
Would any of you guys who have 85G & D800 be so kind to upload (or providing link to) some 100% crop shots taken with 85 1.4 at F 1.4?
I sent my copy back to the dealer for replacement, but I really want to see what this lens is capable of and how it handles D800 36mP sensor wide open.
All I can read here is "mine is sharper than yours", but it's better to see some samples. Please?

that is just example of recent poor nikon QC, send it in. If it is sharp with liveview but not during AF then it is probably miss-focusing and micro adjust helps.
The best way to see if it is an issue with the glass or inconsistencies with focus is to set the camera to live view and set the camera so the AF button on the back is what you are using to set focus... or of course manual focus in live view.

Oh no, it's not very sharp with live view either lol. Here is a series. Top is live view focus and bottom is viewfinder focus. D800E + 85 f/1.4 on a tripod, mup, 3 second delay, and no filters on front of lens. About 5-6 feet away. 100% crops. I know opening it wide open will make it softer, but I hear a lot of ppl say "TACK SHARP wide open" all the time. I'd like to see some people post a series like this of their tack sharp 85 1.4G's so I can see for myself.
Is my lens within spec? Personally I think f/2.8 is acceptable. f/2.0 below is a bit soft.
yes, coresare. Mine and yours are like two drops of water.
I also sent my D800 back to the dealer . Was not 100% sure what to blame, the lens or the cam.
Staying with my M9 for awhile. Need some time to recover from this experience.
What's interesting that nobody has posted any samples that looked better than yours and mine...Strange...
Maybe, for some people is pretty normal, as for me...well, If can't use the 85g at 1.4 then what did I paid for? For the lens being sharp starting at 2.8?
i am too lazy to pull some 85G comparison, but here is from 35G which is about half sharp as 85G is wide open (still fully fine for me)
OOC fine jpeg, not sharpened. you can imagine how better it can be from RAW and with little USM
focus landed probably little in front of little girl's hairs. if you are lucky and get that last half centimeter right (it was MFed from viewfinder) it is just as good as it needs to be.
