I just received my Nikon D800 with 85 1.4 G lens and did some test shots at aperture of 1.4 to see how it compares to my M9 with Summilux 50 1.4 asph wide open.
What I see so far is kind of disappointing towards D800 & 85 1.4G
I hoped to use D800 for high ISO shots where my M9 is not very good at.
The shot isn't too good. Have you tested this combo at various f/stops and multiple subjects? My favorite combo is the 800E and 85G. I'm blown away by its sharpness beyond 100% crops.
IMO, you should shoot them both at the same ISO, 320 in this case, and put the shutter speed on auto.
does not look good to me either. Will try some different settings, but honestly, I expected better sharpness at 1.4
Unfortunately I don't have any other lenses to to see if it's D800 or 85 1.4

Thanks Guari! I'll give it a shot.
I can confirm focus inconsistency of 85G(could be a bad copy though)
Took 10 shots today having d800 on tripod refocusing 85G before taking picture and the result varies from shot to shot. 100% crop is unusable . I guess M9 spoiled me a little
The shot on the left was the sharpest out of 10 with D800 & 85G (M9 on the right just for comparison)
1) 50 have deeper DOF then 85, especially at such close distance.
2) 85G is not optimized for wide open sharpness. it is usable, but priorities are somewhere else
3) when testing sharpness, shoot at base ISO and not low res OFFSET print as test target
4) all said and done, my 85D is sharper then the shots above (user error? maybe. bad lens copy? most probably) and 85G was sharper wide open then 85D (though i wont bother)

dont believe those reports, its probably Nikon's highest resolving lens ever and is stunning on the D800
Yeah, that and the 105 micro VR score the highest on DXO (of the non super teles). I don't have the 85G, thought I do have the 105. It should be able to resolve much higher than this. I wouldn't expect miracles of any lens at 1.4 though.
Realistic expectations and all.
