My first copy of the 24-85AFS VR had to go back as it consistently underexposed by 1 stop. It also was not any better than the older version (which I still have) at 85mm, which was very disappointing.
Other than that it looked and felt pretty good on the D800. Should get the replacement on Monday.
Mine underexposes as well, not a full stop though. Outdoors I like to dial in a little negative EC anyway and pull up the image with the 800. I like the 24-85 as a hiking, go anywhere lens. Plenty sharp stopped down a little and distortion appears to be fairly mild at 24mm.
