I prefer using the NIK filters in Photoshop, since it places the effect on a separate layer. This makes tweaking very easy.
That certainly is appealing. I hadn't thought of that. I tend to do virtually all my post processing in Lightroom, then send a TIFF file to Photoshop for resizing, a final pass of Smart Sharpen and conversion to JPG for saving. When I've done layer work in PS it has always been related to special projects rather than photo processing. I know I'm missing out on much that makes PS such a powerful program. I'm rather scratching the surface.
