Hi Linda!

I am having a blast with the OM-D! Luz (whom you met the last time) also got one, and Aravind (digitalbean) is waiting to get his copy too. The only person who steadfastly refuses (snub is a more appropriate word!) to even hear about the OM-D is Joshua. But that's okay as we all have very different needs and wants.

Yes, the m43 sensor has a multiplication factor of 2x ... vs 1.5 or 1.6x for APS-C.

Disappointed to hear there is no Mandarin Duck sighting at the Irvine Regional Park - but thanks for the feedback - as it saves us a trip there. San Joaquin is pretty boring at this time of year. Not too keen on Bolsa Chica either. Where else can we go where there is some good bird activity?

Cheers,
Bobby

Bobby, looks like you have a winner here! After carting the 1D plus large lenses around for years I'm considering a light weight set up. Of course your photog expertise shows through in your equipment, whatever you choose. These are very impressive! Do you know offhand what the length equivilent of 100- 300 mm is to a standard ff dslr? Say compared to a canon dslr with a 400mm on it?

bTW, I checked Irvine Park for the Mandarin just a few days ago and its not there. In fact most of the wood ducks were gone also. I dont know

Here's a quick and simple test shot/comparison between the Oly 12-50 and 12-60 SWD ... Lumix 100-300 vs Zuiko 50-200 SWD ... and Lumix 100-300 vs M. Zuiko 75-300. The crops on the first couple of images are 100% crops. No crop on the last test/image.

It just occurred to me that maybe the sun peeked through the clouds for the shot with the 12-60 SWD lens.

Zuiko 12-60 has much better contrast, but otherwise detail looks the same.

Rumours are strong Oly will announce a 12-60 f/2.8-4 for Photokina.

That 100-300 looks very good to me overall. I think I might look into one.

Thanks Bobby.

Did you get you camera bracket yet. Mine arrived this week so I can now put the Oly on my tripods.

Yes, the Zuiko SWD has better contrast but otherwise the resolution and sharpness is quite comparable.

Are you referring to the RRS plate? No, I have not received mine yet. What did you order ... the camera plate or the pricey L-plate? Can you post a picture please? I may want to get the L-plate instead if it's very nicely made.

Thanks Bobby for the tests. The 100-300 looks nice.

Obviously the Oly SWD 50-200 is larger and heavier, and lacks CD focus, but I like it's speed. How did it handle? Was the AF workable?

Hi Boby,
I am planning to get OM-D, but wondering to go with the kit or buy body and a lens since don't have lenses other than canon. what I don't like about the kit is the size, but Panasonic Lumix 7-14mm seem big too. I was leaning toward 12 prime love the looks too. but your comment about the practicality of 7-14 seems very true.
so wonder what a good lens to go with OM-D, I am actually leaning toward a fast one
thanks everyone

The 7-14 is a really nice lens ... and so is the 25/1.4 and 45/1.8. These are my favorites and they are all high-grade lenses. Only reason I got the 12-60 kit lens was because of the "kit deal" and the 12-60 would make a nice P&S kit for those times when you are not doing any serious photography. The grip is necessary too IMO.

Personally Gary, I wouldn't buy the 50-200 because it's heavy and the AF is really slow ... it takes between 1 and 3 seconds to AF - not instant like native m43 lenses. If you already own this lens, then by all means get the adapter and use the lens ... but I wouldn't go out and buy one. Also I think it's just a matter of time before Olympus (or Panasonic) releases a high-grade long zoom lens in the m43 mount. I am waiting for that.

I got a camera plate that I was told would properly fit the E-M5. What a joke, it's way too big about 1/2" wider than the camera and also fouls the flip out screen.. Have to send it back tomorrow.

I don't know RRS or Kirk can make an L-plate or even a conventional camera that would fit the OM-D perfectly, as the body is so slim. I mean, these plates for example may kill the beautiful lines of the camera:

Thanks Bobby... that's what I wanted to know.

Just knowing that lenses like the 150 f/2 exist make me drool, but I guess we'll have to see what finally emerges for M43.

I know some of ya'll are real critical and all enamored with the exotic expensive 3rd party lenses. But for the OMD just hanging out and to be able to just snap something like this off for me is a treat. After years of lugging around full DSLR setups to accomplish the same this is a welcome change. With just the lowly kit 12-50 lens on the OMD.

I am interested in upgrading from the Panasonic G3 to the OM-D. The 12-50 lens seems a bit big to me, in a way negating the advantage of a small handy quality camera. Do you find that to be true in actual use?

I was interested in the Panasonic 14-45 OIS lens with the OM-D, but Roger Cicala at Lensrentals.com wrote:

Its a decent little lens when shot on a Panasonic Micro 4/3 camera. Its become clear that Panasonic does some in-camera processing to even the RAW files to remove chromatic aberration and distortion which makes the lens pretty decent on a Panasonic camera, but not if shot on the other brand.

Any thoughts on this? Could this be fixed with a Lightroom lens profile?

I have not tried that lens myself but PZ's test/review looks pretty good to me:

http://www.photozone.de/olympus--four-thirds-lens-tests/414-pana_1445_3556

I understand that there is some correction when you import RAW files into LR-4.1 (perhaps Jordan or someone else can confirm this) but there is no Olympus or Panasonic lens correction profiles in the Develop mode.
