I think its great considering the price. Or maybe Canon has just brainwashed me lately to think that anything less than $800 is a bargain!
I have zero interest in the lens, but for $199 with IS in this day and age of Canon screwing us right royally on pricing of gear, it's pretty good value.
I'm waiting for a new 35 f/2 or f/1.8 with USM, IS or not.

$199 with IS? Did I overlook something?
Edit:
I corrected my bad english. Thank you, Jim :-)

I bought this lens as a walk-around companion for my old 5D that doesn't get as much use anymore. I keep it around as a backup, but now I'll probably just throw it in the car when I'm out and about. The image quality is still great and this lens makes it more portable than the camera with the 35/1.4 or 50/1.5.
But I, like you, am awaiting a 35 f/2 upgrade. Basically the same lens as the 28, 50, 85, 100 USM lenses, but in 35mm focal length. Unfortunately, Canon will probably give us something more like those stupid 24 and 28 IS lenses they released earlier this year and the 35 f/1.8 or f/2 (whichever it is) will come in at a hefty $799 (still would be cheaper than the 1.4, but not the $300 price tag it currently is).
Keep the samples coming guys. I spoke with B&H finally and they were holding my order because I added the lens hood and they were waiting to ship it all at once. They said they would release the lens and ship the hood when it was available. I probably don't really NEED the hood, but I like to have them with my lenses. I'm sort of weird like that. My wife has a 70-200 f/2.8 L and I think she had the hood for all of about 15 minutes and then it was gone. It drives me nuts every time I look at that lens and the hood is missing...
Anyway, I should have mine this week. I'll post some samples when I get it.
^ I'm not as bad as you, but I can understand the feeling. Lenses with sufficiently-recessed front elements I can stand without hoods (Sigma 105 macro comes to mind - no reason to use the hood). I could also stand to use this without a hood, or my current 50 1.8 II, etc.
With near-flush element lenses like the 70-200, though, I almost grit my teeth every time I see someone shooting the lens without a hood. I just cannot fathom someone willing to risk either physical damage or flare (even if it's super-duper flare resistant) by not using the hood.
I'm waiting on mine to show up, but I picked up a 50mm f/1.8 to do a comparison. I hope to later this week.
Any other specific tests you would suggest or like to see (will do if possible that is)?
James, that is very nice of you. Apart from that only the usual IQ tests. I got a feeling that at similar apertures there will be minimal IQ difference. Other than that, user impressions while actually shooting are very important for me.
Oops, I had it in my mind both the new lenses (18-135) had IS. Well then I take it back, I don't think it's great value at all for a slow 40mm lens at all with stepper motor rather than USM.

I'm confused. Why do you need all three?
Happy shooting,
Yakim.
Do you ask your missus why she needs so many shoes also?
:-)
I have the 35mm f2.0 and I've ordered the 40mm.
I love the 35mm f2.
I'm interested to compare them.
My hunch is that the 40mm will have noticeably better image quality.
We will see.
Hopefully my 40mm will be here by the end of the week.

Someone looks like they might be doing some electrophysiology. Is that a patch clamp amplifier just into the bokeh?
Yes it is! I'm in Japan for 10 weeks doing research. My host PI is a neurobiologist who studies behavior, while I'm a behaviorist who's interested in incorporating neurobiology and physiology (if that makes sense). Being thrown into a whole new world of technology relative to what I normally do!
