I can get a used D700 for $1500, but with the announcment of the D600, would it be smart to wait until that is released and then see where the pricing falls for both the D700 and D600?

Do you need it, or want it?? There is a huge difference... Although I shoot Canon the dilemma is the same... If you "Need it the D700 is a very nice camera... If you "want" it, and have patients, wait...

Currently I am shooting with a D1X and have a busy 2 months ahead of me, so it's more of a need. But if the price of a D700 drops to $1000, it might be worth it.

Neither are an option in the next 2 months (D600 release and D700 approaching $1000).

It all depends on if a D600 will have the features you want (based on rumor of course). I suspect that the D600 will have potentially a better sensor DR and noise-wise, but many of the body features will be like the D7000 and that might not be good enough for you.

Study both cameras (as best you can at this point) and see which fits better and either get a D700 or wait until Sept/Oct/Nov. for the D600.

If you are talking about being busy making money with the camera, I don't know how you could afford to wait any longer. The difference in IQ and printing capabilities are huge, as is the capability of the cameras. You can get good photos in much lower light conditions with the d700.

If it were me, I wouldn't even think about waiting. The d700 is one of the best cameras available, especially at its current price point. It's a no brainer, IMO.

Seems like picking up a D700 would be best. Thanks for the advice.

To me the comparison is similar to the D300s to the D7000. With the newer body you lose the more solid build and feel of the old one. You lose the mode button, pc sync and ten pin remote terminals. The older body will probably have a larger buffer (relative to the file size), faster fps with grip, and a better AF system. The newer body should have greater dynamic range, more MP, better high ISO (when downsized to match), a lower base ISO, U1/U2 modes, and better video. The D600 should have a second card slot and be smaller/lighter.

I still prefer the D300s to the D7000, and will probably prefer the D700 to the D600 for the same reasons. One has the technical ability to produce slightly better photographs, but the other (to me) just feels better and is easier to use, and therefore makes me want to take photographs more. I think most people will prefer the newer model though. People used to the build and controls of the professional bodies will prefer the old model.

Edit: I don't think the D700 price will fall too much. I'd guess not more than $200, and certainly not to $1000 for a long time. I also don't think the D600 will be priced under $1800.

Search the local camera shops and the internet for a D800.
It is worth the extra money.
I am using mine for Event Photography and getting my best pictures ever.

We purchased our first D700 after the D800 was released and our second after the D600 was announced. No regrets. These are incredible cameras.

I recently switched from Canon 5Dmk2 to Nikon D700 (one month ago). The resolution argument is pointless. These files are so clean and sharp and can be printed into posters no problem. The AF is a beast, especially coming from canon 5d2. The ISO is great and the flash sync speed is higher. the camera is rock solid and with a grip and the D3 battery you can shoot 8FPS. I open up the uncompressed raw files (25mb) in Capture one or Lightroom and am just blown away at the clarity. Honestly super good camera if you don't need the video. most importantly it screams pro from a performance perspective. And is built to last. I prefer M43 for video personally and like to have a proprietary video camera. D600 seems nice but im sure there will be some compromises made. if anything in build. There is nothing about the D700 that has let me down.

24mp wil be nice but you will learn megapixels aren't that important at all. Clean files, speed, ergo, button layout etc..these are high priority for me.

Need = buy now. The bonus is that the D700 is a superb camera. Only thing really missing when on assignment are dual card slots, but that'snot on your D1x anyway so you won't be losing anything but gaining a whole lot!

If you're the type that will sell off the old gen to buy the new gen then wait. With that said "need" trumps all.
