Chicago is VERY radioactive. Just turn one on and there are stations all over the dial (if you're an old fart like me) or the digital display for the younger whipper snappers.

If they can have so many used caneras and lenses on display and for sale, why not here, also? I always thought that it was great to see a lens or camera that I once lusted after for sale in a local store used and at an affordable price.
These chuko stores (japanese for used gear) exist because people, especially in tokyo, will jsut swing by on the way home after work and such. Its jsut a train stop on the way to wherever. Ginza store in above later posted pic...very convenient location and one I hit up on tokyo hops from okinawa. Its on the way to several other places I hit up. Even has a very nice cake and other sweets shop next to it (bit cut off but the full name is Fujiya). I go to this nikon store, my wife goes there. We both end up happy...me especially as I hear less sighing in background as I try stuff out lol.
Akihabara section also good for this. But tokyo over time developed districts like this. Looking for electronics stores (new or used), vendors made it one station stop and shop lol (and again akihabara a real convenient station).
If in NYC you'd have this convenience as well with BH and adorama (I am guessing they stand up used sections, never been yet). train or 2, brisk walk and there ya go.
Anyother town USA, man if like where my rents live...I have a PO 5 minutes from the rents house and it be easier to post here, e-bay or jsut go to adoram/keh/bh/etc to start up a online resale process and ship than to find a brick and mortar who deals with used glass.
Don't have sellers going out their way to stock the used shelves, you won't have the used shelves to show buyers the tl;dr.

Think of it as a bank account.
The prices for good used Nikkors has risen faster than inflation, stocks, bonds or interest.
And the best glass has risen faster than gold.
