p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Anyone used a Nikon 28-105 lens on a FX camera?

I was browsing through some of Nikon's older lenses and ran across the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 lens. It's about the range I'm looking for to go on a D700, but didn't see a lot of comments about how it performs on a FX camera. Has anyone used this lens on a FX body? I'm looking for imput on sharpness, focus speed, hunting or not, dark edges in the corners or edges, any other pro or con. Thanks.

Wow. That is sharp. I'm thinking about getting one. Just wanted some feedback. This helps.

I've used one for some time on my D3, and IQ was very good. The lens is in fact a kind of 18-70 for FX sensors. At the end, I went for the Tamron 28-75 2.8 instead because of the speed, when I didn't want to carry the heavy weight stuff (14-24, 24-70, 70-200 etc...)

Used one on a D700, overall satisfied with IQ when I did not want to carry larger/ heavier lenses. Got rid of it only because I want my "one zoom lens only" kit to start at 24mm. The rotating filter threads were a pain, and the hood is a joke (don't spend extra $$ on the hood, just buy a small dog collar instead :-) )

To go a little beyond your oiriginal question, unless you needed or wanted the extra 70-105 range, I think I would either spend less and get the Nikon 28-70 f3.5/4.5 AFD or spend a little extra and get the Tamron 28-75. I would personally go with a 24-85 but that's simply because I love the 24mm focal length.

I need the range, so that's the one thing that caught my eye with this one.

It was designed for use on film cameras so as noted, it should (and does) do a great job on a FF body.

Then I think there's only the 28-105 choice in it's price range. You'll love it.

Can't beat it for 5x the price. I use it a lot on my D700.

I shoot mostly MF lens and the 28-105 is the only AF lens I have It works nicely on the D700
The macro goes to 1:2 I believe and works well
Good luck in finding one in great condition most people don't want to let them go

There seem to be several on ebay, but there appears to be a couple of different model numbers. Which one is the best?

First lens I got when I purchased my D700. Rocked it all over DC.

I bought one not long ago and did a Blog post about it with samples.

Overall it's a pretty decent lens for the price but I had to return mine as it wouldn't go to f/3.5 at 28mm and the zoom ring was just to sticky that I had to look away from the viewfinder just to zoom.

That said, if you can find one in good nick, they're a pretty handy lens.

In addition to my other question about the model number, I have one other question. Is the zoom ring located nearest to the camera body or the other end? I know some of the older Nikons have the zoom rings opposite of the newer ones.

This one's with the 28-105 and D700. That lens is just ok.

I picked up a D700 with less than 1700 clicks on it just over a week ago. I have heard good things about this lens and will pick one up off ebay probably when I find a good one for the right price from the right seller.

the zoom ring is near the body. the skinny ring at the end of the lense is focus.

It's an extremely versatile lense with the macro mode. The only catch is lots of distortion at the wide end. I still use mine on a film body.

I have been extremely happy with mine on a D700. It's a versatile walk-around, it's light enough to carry all day and it has a bonus macro mode. The macro mode is no substitute for a dedicated purpose-built macro lens, but if you are at the far end of the hike miles from the super macro lens safely tucked away in your trunk, it will do a pretty nice job.

I picked one up and used it for a few weeks and traded it to my father-in-law. At times, I found the corners to be a little bit dark. But I kind of wish I had kept it. I may try to see if I can get it back from him.

Having gone through a couple of samples of this lens I've found quite a bit of sample variation. So find a good one and it's a pretty useful lens, especially if you are not going to try to use it wide open and make 24x36 inch prints from it.

As you can see from the landscape image I posted the corners can be a bit dark even stopped down, but it usually is mostly seen in blue skies in my experience.
