Which variable ND filter do you recommend?
Also should I buy a larger 82mm one and use step-up rings or should I just buy a 77mm one?

I've been happy with my Singh Ray DUAL in 77mm. However, it vignettes at 24 mm. dave

I got the Tiffen in 77mm and I really like it. In fact, it's oversized so it doesn't vignette.

What lens have you tried this filter on? At what point does it start to vignette?

All variable neutral density filters have problems when you get to wider angles, with a weak but distinctive X shaped pattern showing up across the main part of the image. The effect shows up starting at a focal length of about 24 mm, and gets fairly strong when you get to very wide angles. And note that this issue is different than straight vignetting in the corners caused by the diameter of the filter being too small. Here is one previous thread that shows the X effect:
