I have shot Canon for the past 10 years starting with the D30. Recently I have sold most of my Canon stuff to shoot Nikon. There is a lot I could say about gear(s) but this is the sports forum so . . .
I am about to sell my Canon 400 f/2.8 IS and pick up a Nikon 400 f/2.8 VR and hope I am not making a mistake. I trust I am not, so help me out and post some great sports shots taken with the Nikon 400. (I realize both Nikon and Canon make excellent 400 f/2.8)
Shots below taken with the Canon 400 from last night's game.
I made the switch last month I went with the 200-400 vrii, got tired of lugging a 400 around. No regrets what so ever, if anything I am thinking about getting a 500.
Grant I don't know how people shoot both systems, or why you would want too. Imagine that your Nikon body quit working you would be stuck at 200 or 400 until your camera got fixed, or if your Canon did, you would only go to 200 unless you had teleconverters. IMHO you should sell your Canon equipment, buy a Nikon 400MM a D3s, and likely have some money left over after selling the 1d2n, 400 and 200F1.8.

currently i am using both canon and nikon. nikon D3 with zooms (14-24, 24-70, 70-200 & 200 f/2.0 VR) canon 1d2n with primes (400 f/2.8 IS, 200 f/1.8)
if i keep the canon 400 i will sell the 1d2n and get a 1d4.
if I sell the canon 400 i will sell all my canon equipment and pick up a ds3 or d800.

I would completely switch to Nikon and consider the investment in a D4 and the 200-400F4. It's an awesome sports lens. I don't like the 400 due to it's size/weight. Plus you can't zoom (obviously). Just something to consider. Wouldn't buy the D800, it's not a sports camera.
I want to agree with this, and honestly, I have a 200-400, but once I got the 400 (AF-I, so it's OLD), I stopped using the 200-400. I keep it around in case I shoot some daytime stuff, but that's rare in Phoenix during summer months.
I'd save the money on the D4 and rather get a D3s or D3, depending on what you shoot at normally, then get a 400 2.8 of some sort.
I to was also in the same situation about 3 years ago and went for the total switch, I first started out with a 600 but really missed the 2.8. I already had the 200-400 but again I missed the 2.8. So I sold the 600 and bought a 400 2.8 afs II. I have not looked back. You can ask fellow FMer P Alesse what I went thru. Lol. You don't need the VR unless you can afford it. It is a wise decision to get the 400. All camera bodies I use are D3s and D3.
I will post some photos from the lens camera combo later.
