p.1 #1 · Little River Rd - Great Smoky Mtn Nat'l Park

Spotted this location along the Little River Rd while driving back from Roaring Fork towards Townsend one morning. From the road, it didn't look all that promising, but I just kept walking up the hill along the 'stream', and it seemed like the photo ops just kept getting better and better.

The first 2 are essentially the same shot. The 2nd is simply a closer/tighter view as I wasn't sure I liked the foliage on the right side of the first when I previewed it in camera. The last 2 are each just further up the hill. Overall, I'd guess there's not more than a hundred yds distance between the first and last.....one of the reasons I tend to favor these more intimate cascades than the big towering named falls.

Hope you enjoy!

Fo - the Townsend area is my base for shooting the Smokies unless I am camping.

Enjoyed this series!

Hey Fo,

Very cool, what a really sweet area you found. #1 is my favorite, I like the close in view in #2 also, I think they both coexist real well.

I'm with Jim, the first has a very balanced comp, though the others are all very well done. My preference is 1,3,2,4

Really good series. That's one of the great things (pun) about this park,,,so many photo ops for anyone willing to explore a bit, and it's constantly changing with the weather and the seasons.

Nice greens and yellows, Fo. Your comps and SS work wonderfully here. Nicely done.

Glad you enjoyed!. Townsend is definitely the place to be if you want to concentrate on the Cades Cove / Tremont areas. I might try staying in Gatlinburg the next time I'm down that way cause I'm thinking I might want to focus more on the eastern southern side of the park next time around.

It did turn out to be a nice location that I probably should have worked even more. Given it was my first time spendiing much time there, I got a little 'touristy' on this trip, and did more spot to spot hopping than I'd normally be inclined to do.

Interesting you favor the first. If I were to choose between it & the 2nd to include in a 'best of' for this trip, I would select this one now as well....though at the time, I thought sure the 2nd would be the choice.

Thanks! I always enjoy hearing others' preferences as they so often significantly differ from my own. The 3rd was one I wasn't too sure about. The way the water kinda runs out the right of the pic ~ 2/3 of the way down just seemed 'off' to me somehow, and I wasn't sure the remaining elements held it together well enough to make it a 'keeper'.

Gracias! And yeah, this park is definitely a gold mine for photographers. I love the Moab/So Utah area, but this might just be my new fave location with the variety of shooting opportunities available.

Thank you! I did get lucky with the light for water shots for the most part as it was frequently mostly overcast while I was there. And even when the sun was fully out, the tree cover dappled it enough that too bright a light was never really a problem. There were actually a couple times when I was wishing for a couple stops more light because I found myself having to choose between f-stop and shutter speed. And on a couple of occasions, I would have preferred to have the option to use a faster SS.

Thanks, Ben. I would be interested to know if there's something in particular you like about the 3rd as the composition in that one still leaves me with a little uncertainty.

Phew!....I'm really glad to hear someone else likes the last one as that is, by far, my fave of the bunch. Many thanks!

Thanks, John! This is the bunch that I mentioned in your thread a week or so ago that 'water + moss (also) = GSMNP'.

No favorites here, although I am a sucker for the wider composition in the first. Those greens are to die for

All these are great shots. The last one is my favorite because of the ferns being framed by the water. At least that is what it seems to me as it shows life can survive anywhere.

The Little River road is my next stop in the park, very nice images here, thanks for sharing them, I like them all, but am drawn to the fern in the last.

I have not mastered how to work the quotes. Hope this works.

What I want in these sorts of shots is some detail in the water, if it is pure white, I skip. All of yours pass that test. Next I want nothing blown out. Third, I want a place to stand. Forth, I prefer to see a start and finish as opposed to a close up.

I like the ferns on the third image and it feels like I may have a place to stand at the bottom, the water is not gushing there. These are tough requirements for images like this and sometimes we don't get them all.

Very good compositions and shutter speeds here. I'd like the greens a little darker and contrasty but that's a matter of taste.

Gordon.

Interesting take. Wish I could say I thought of that at time of the shoot! Thanks!

Wish I could tell you exactly where this spot was, but all I can say is that it was between the entrance from Townsend and 'The Sinks'. Glad you enjoyed!

VERY interesting comment. I'll have to ponder that for a while. Many thanks!

Thanks, Gordon. I a did try several different contrast levels. But in the end felt something along this line was commensurate with the light available at the time.
