MacKeeper has lots of negative reviews. Onyx is free and has always been highly recommended for system maintenance.

What exactly do you mean by "clean the hard drive"? The best way to "clean" the hard drive is to use the Apple Disk Utilities and click on erase.

Macaroni is a tried and trusted program for OSX maintenance. MacKeeper appears to be a risky venture...

Macaroni will run the daily, weekly, and monthly UNIX maintenance scripts. It will also rebuild disk permissions. Basically, Macaroni is a timer utility for setting the frequency of these maintenance operations. Macaroni is also a 32 bit preference panel; Apple may break it some day. Updates to Macaroni have been infrequent; basically it doesn't need frequent updates because of its limited actions.

Onyx does this and so much more. Take a look at Onyx's user reviews.

Thanks Dan for the link. It definitely looks worth exploring. My buddy who consults on Macs is not a big fan of third party products running in the OSX environment so I tend to run a pretty vanilla operation. The simplicity of Macaroni is one of its appeals since it essentially runs regular Unix maintenance. I sent my friend a link and will see what he has to say on the topic. He's currently doing beta testing for the next iteration of OSX as he did previously for Lion. I trust his judgment.

You are welcome. There are indeed those who recommend doing nothing as far as "cleaning" a Mac OS. For example, see the Myth of the Dirty Mac.
