Macaroni will run the daily, weekly, and monthly UNIX maintenance scripts. It will also rebuild disk permissions. Basically, Macaroni is a timer utility for setting the frequency of these maintenance operations. Macaroni is also a 32 bit preference panel; Apple may break it some day. Updates to Macaroni have been infrequent; basically it doesn't need frequent updates because of its limited actions.
Onyx does this and so much more. Take a look at Onyx's user reviews.
Thanks Dan for the link. It definitely looks worth exploring. My buddy who consults on Macs is not a big fan of third party products running in the OSX environment so I tend to run a pretty vanilla operation. The simplicity of Macaroni is one of its appeals since it essentially runs regular Unix maintenance. I sent my friend a link and will see what he has to say on the topic. He's currently doing beta testing for the next iteration of OSX as he did previously for Lion. I trust his judgment.
