A few images from the weekend. Saturday was a lovely day for a long hike, with the sun beaming down and thousands of frogs singing in chorus. Sunday, a couple hours further north, the lakes are still close to 100% ice covered, and there was still remnants of snow in shady areas.

Here are a few images from our hike at Elk Island National Park. All handheld with 7D and 400mm f5.6. The frog image had a full set of tubes behind the lens.

1. Alces alces - Shortly after starting the Saturday hike, we came upon this female moose. The sun was angled mostly from behind. You will notice lots of hair falling out as this is the time of year they shed their winter coat. Ticks are a big issue in this park, and the patch of bare skin showing may be the result of ticks.

2.Alces alces - The confines of the trail and the closeness of the moose made it difficult to get a full body shot, so here is another portrait.

3. Ex Alces alces - A bit further up the trail from where we found the first moose (above), we discovered a second, but less fortunate one. It looked a bit younger, and appears to have died over the winter. Damage to the body seemed mostly from scavenging activity, with very little missing. Most missing flesh was on the head area. This shot shows insect activity on the body now that things are really warming up.

4. Chorus Frog - Some of the ponds and marshes were alive with these little frogs.

5. Bison - A younger male. Note the really patchy hair. Not sure if these critters also get ticks, or if this is a normal way to shed (seems odd if it is).

6. Bison - Old warrior, showing lots of horn loss. This guy had lots of long shaggy hair, a sign of bison maturity.

Very nice selection Ken and with some interesting information. I do like portrait,2, the best of the set although the Bison is a strong second.

Nice series Ken. Bison are such imposing looking creatures with impossibly large heads in relationship to their bodies...very enjoyable.

#2 and the bison are the picks. I think the bison lose their fur in patches like muskox. Are they really approachable in the wild? Don
