Bit of a burning question here. I know you used the most suited AF configuration for the task - which, as much as being a testimony to your skills obviously, the results evidence - but I've been curious how closely the face detection approaches the realm of possibilities for sports. If you used Auto Area with the face detection and it picked out a face, would it track properly in the heat of the action, say for a sport like this?

Michael, Michael, Michael. You're killing me here!
This might just be the clincher that has me paying a small premium to get my hands on a D800 this Spring.

thanks Jammy...
SAng, I have not tried face recognition on sports and probably won't as I prefer to pick the focus points myself. Only time I see myself using face recognition is if I give the camer to someone to take a pic of my family and I

This is what I wanted to hear about the improved focus system.
What aperture were these shot at? For anything moving I'm usually at f/4 with my D700 even with the 70-200 to give the af some margin for error which would be nice not to have to do.

Thanks, that makes sense. I've wondered about practical use for gymnastics floor routines where the face is sometimes near the top of the frame one second and then right on the floor the next. It seems unlikely, much as maybe this was going to be a justification for getting one of these or a D4... Thanks again.

Those shots are beyond description, fantastic to the max. I don't know what to say beyond WOW, WOW, WOW!!! You have me drooling to use my D800 with my 300 2.8, but I am realistic enought to know I am not in your league, that doesn't make me feel bad, because I am not sure who else is! Thanks for sharing your work.

Thanks for the great pictures and the feedback. I have first considered the D800 as a main camera but at the end, I went for the D4 for low light action. It would be interesting to know if the excellent AF performance and low light IQ outperform a D3 for indoor action shooting.

Guy
Guy,
From my experience so far, even in lowlight it's autofocus is more surefooted than the d3

Face detection for sports...Are you serious?
In-camera metering was once a pipe dream. So was ISO 1600. For that matter, so were cameras.
Any technology needs to mature. It is only reasonable to judge its applicability at the current level of evolution, but one should keep in mind that each new generation gets better and that things we'd once thought unthinkable are now very serious indeed.
