Took the D800 to a Beach Polo Tournament today. Thought it be a great way to test
the AF when it comes to tracking fast subjects coming at me.
To summarize my findings, I have not shot with any camera that has a better auto focus system.
The focus was spot on in every shot. I kept the focus points on the riders so that I would not end up with blurry riders on sharply focused horses
These were all taken with the 400 2.8 vr
There was one rider which outplayed everyone out there, you'll be able to guess who from the pics..

I think others will say it's more what's behind the camera in this case, although damn that 400 f2.8 has some amazing bokeh

What really sucks is not owning the 400mm VR f/2.8 Very nice shots!

These are like studio portraits, except stuff is moving. I've never seen so much detail in action-oriented photography.

Great shots, Michael.

I'll be at the tournament both tomorrow and Sunday. Will you go back? Are you shooting for fun or work? If for fun, did they give you any trouble about your gear?

I'm thinking that this looks like an ideal situation for the 200–400.

Nice ... good sports shots are more about good timing than frame rate. You're technique is obviously very good indeed. Nice work.

Great images Michael! Nothing like a 400 2.8 wide open.

Just curious, have you had the chance to shoot sports/action with a D3s? (I could not tell from your equipment profile.) I canceled my D4 order because I just couldn't see the real value for what I shoot. I was curious about the D800 though.

Thanks.

Mike

SUPERB. Amazing detail in every shot. Looks like the D800 may find a lot of uses in the action field normally dominated by pro bodies.
