Happily spending his or her winter in Moss Landing, California, diving near the boats in the harbor and rising to show off the new breeding plumage. Soon to be headed north. Their calls are my favorite sound of wild places.

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone! We were fortunate to encounter this beautiful animal when it was not feeling too shy.
Like Eric, I have great memories of summers in Maine, where I did some canoe guiding and listened to loons most nights.
