You can definitely mix ETTL and manual. Using the Groups setting you can toggle each of the five groups (or three without 5D3 or1DX) independently to be ETTL or manual. You can also turn groups on and off remotely. Pretty sweet. With the 5D3 you can control it all from the camera LCD, but so far I prefer using the controls on the back of the 600EX on camera as it seems faster to me.

the range seems fine for typical wedding day use - shot two weddings with them so far, and no misfires for me. Although I haven't tested the range yet, I feel like it's "good enough".

Competitive Cameras in Dallas, TX - www.competitivecameras.com has the 600EXRT's and wireless transmitters in stock.
I have 3 600EXRT's and the wireless transmitter - working very well so far. It really is nice to be able to control everything and the added benefit of not worrying about the pocketwizards is REALLY REALLY nice.

Range of 100ft worked fine for me - ie it will work in a large reception venue. It is best to use them with external battery packs so that the internal batteries only power the wireless communication.

^ I just did too. After this weekends experience taught me that I would rather have three lights and not have to trigger with OCF, Its just restrictive. Using ST-E3 frees up a light.
