If after patiently waiting the birds don't come close enough there is always the possibility to crop differently.

1) Chopping off the top and bottom.

2) Or cropping verticals from horizontal images.

4) But the real solution would be a longer lens or camouflage myself. Will try the camo trick soon.

5) My first wild kestrel! 50% crop.

6) Actually there where two of them. Heavy crop.

7) Insane crop with up resolution to A4 size at 300 dpi.

8) Godwit in flight. We call them Grutto after the striking sounds they make calling each other.
90% of the north-west european Godwits brood in the Netherlands. Glad they are back from Africa.

Chris, as a guy who finally gave up on any serious efforts to photograph birds- especially in flight- I can appreciate the difficulties and efforts represented here.
You build to an excellent finale with this series- I really like the last two images. Bravo.

Interesting framing in this set, Chris. It takes a good eye to do it and a good grasp at of composition

#3 is my favorite. Great job with the IF captures, as well.

Thank you Socrate. I do the cropping with fixed ratio in camera raw and try to train/trust my own eyes.
Although I have to admit that for #3 I used the crop tool in photoshop with the rules of thirds grid on.
