Some one told me Hairy now I'm being told Downy. So which is it?

I would vote for Downy...shorter bill than Hairy. Also smaller but without a comparison I guess that would be difficult to tell (6 1/2" vs ~9")

I dont think that he was 9" so I'm guessing Downy then. Any more input is welcome.

Biggest difference is the size. Without something in the frame to give us a sense of size, it could be either.

Downy:
A small black-and-white woodpecker (approximately 6.5" long).

The bill is rather short and dainty, about one-third as long as the distance from the base of the bill to the back of the head.

Hairy:
A black-and-white woodpecker about the size of a robin (averaging 9-13" long).

The bill is long, chisel-like, about as long as the distance from the base of the bill to the back of the head.

Downy

You could not make it clearer Karl. So what type of tree is it on?

Fine photo Paul. without it, there would be no debate.

Hi,

Short dainty bill - definitely Downy. Pity you didn't includ3 the outer tail feathers, as they have a pretty diagnostic field mark - Downy has 2 small horizontal dark bars on them, while Hairy's are plain white.

Well this guy landed so close that I had to set back to get him in focus and by the time I spun the zoom ring he flew so no tail feathers unfortunitly.

Thanks for the help every one. I will call that conclusive.

Beautiful shot. 100% sure that this is a male Downy Woodpecker. I see them everyday. I have three to four pair in my backyard. I even had a male to eat out of my hand.
