For pure birding, I am told there is not a better value option than 400 f5.6. There have been posts here comparing the two and fokls have indicated that IQ wise they are simliar but AF on the 400 is better. In your shoes, I would likely get the 2x first and then consider 400 if 2x is inadequate.
These are nice Brian. How well did the 5D III focus for if shots? The one you posted looks good.
You can't beat the 400 for the price, but the tc is cheaper still. I'd suggest trying the tc first - you could always sell it here without too big a hit if you didn't like it.
Very nice, Brian. I'm right there with you wishing for a longer lens, but you got some nice flight shots, and the background of the lake is very pleasing.
