They did about 150 years ago. You took the cap off the lens to make the exposure and when you were done, you put the cap back on. It was as quiet as you could make it.

Another vote for the F3 + motor drive, my favorite. It sounds like you just took one heck of a photograph.

Ha. Even if the shot is junk, it's worth it just for the sound.

Or very minimal. I like the sound of the D700 shutter, just not when shooting it.

The quiet shutter mode of the 5D3 would make shooting candids less intrusive.

5D3 has "silent" mode, which is very quiet.
So with 5D3 you have a choice. You
Nikonians should try both modes.

Is the shutter "sound" relative to the IQ?? I ask as mine sounds like a nightingale serenading it's loved ones..

Call me old fashioned, but I still love the sound of a good OM-1.

That and my D90 or D50 are probably my favorites.

The normal shutter sound of the 5D3 is not the most "solid" I have ever heard. I prefer other camera's sound by far. I guess however that it has to do with the mechanism that is also responsible for what is today's the most quiet sound to be found on a DSLR. Have you ever tried the silent mode? Simply put, it's amazing!

Don't know if this post has any value to it. But, here I go.

I picked up the D800 today and as expected, it's a pretty hefty well build camera. The shutter actually sound a little more solid than that of the D700. I also played with the 5D3. It looks much nicer than the previous versions. However, the shutter on the 5D3 has to be the worst sounding shutter I have ever heard. On continuous shooting, it sounds like an old Smith Corona typewritter at 60 words per minute. I kid you not. it was horrible. What is obvious

No, this post has no value . Elvis Presley sings better than Pat Boone. Canon goes 6 FPS. vs.Nikon 4 FPS
