I'm down to a couple of mushroom pics. Gotta attack my closet again (sigh).
1st here is common on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. It's my belief that although lovely to look at, it is quite poisonous.
2nd taken in western Oregon somewhere. I have no idea if it's poisonous.
Eating wild mushrooms can be dangerous. People who are really good at identifying the non-poisonous varieties tell us they are safe if you choose carefully.
Those who are not so good at identifying edible mushrooms- but think they are- are dead.
Plain white ones from the market for me, thank you very much.
I remember reading about a family that was supposed to be expert in identifying edible mushrooms. They all died one day due to incorrect identification.
Wouldn't touch one with a 39 and a half foot pole.
Morels are the only wild mushroom I'd take a chance on - speaking of which, with this uncanny early warm weather we're having, might be worth doing some hunting here fairly soon.
very nice.. i'd eat the big white ones with the pink bottom ..and the chanterelles that grow in the woods here.. i wouldn't eat magic mushrooms.. or the ones you have here Charlie
Charlie, I think the pretty one is a Fly Agaric and it's poisonous. Nice photo. There are only a few that I will eat, King Boletas and Puffballs are the ones I feel best about. Even when identified by an expert I will only try a tiny bite if I haven't eaten that one before.
Yup, number 1 is Amanita muscaria, the fly agaric. Muscaria causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating of several hours duration. Easily antidoted with atropine. Definitely poisonous but not as bad as Amanita phalloides and a few others. Phalloides and its cousins causes the above but follows up with liver and kidney necrosis; often requires liver transplant to save life.
I don't know what the mushroom in image number 2 is. It's not phalloides.
Excellent book by David Arora: Mushrooms Demystified.

I have to remember the warning and keep to the mushrooms found on my pizza.
It is a very pretty mushroom which advertises its toxicity with the colorful cap.

Thanks kindly all youse guys and doll .
I thought the first image was the fly agaric according to the pictures I found when I Googled poisonous mushrooms- but the shapes of those I found weren't capped like my pic. Thanks for the ID.
To each his/her own on what they eat. For me, I avoid all wild mushrooms and all blowfish. It's chancy enough that I eat my own cooking .
