Pretty shocking but itunes and icloud (and iphoto too apparently) do nasty stuff when you use them to transfer images to ipads. They recompress them (and for some ipads even resize) images before synching AND it turns out that they even remap colors trying to give images more pop!!

granted itunes stinks for transfers anyway, but make sure you never use itunes to sync any photos or images
So do not use those programs or methods for transferring any images that you want to look how they are supposed to look.
EDIT: although it is true that the previous ipads had a much smaller than sRGB gamut, so perhaps the remapping they do might make images look more natural on the old ones, but whatever it does, is definitely not supposed to be good the new ipad.
