· nikon lens question
what's the sharpest nikon lens with the least distortion (for studio work ? portraits mostly)
I need one around 50-80mm for ensembles and another around 80-150 for singles/couples.
zoom/prime/combination which ever has the best characteristics
if it's soft wide open but super sharp stopped down around f/4 it's fine since I'm not going to shoot wide open in the studio
for example I'm coming from Canon and I'm using the 50mm f/1.4 at f/4 or above for max resolution and the 135mm f/2L at 2.8 or above
I hope I made myself clear & thanks

50mm 1.8G works great after f2. from my experience, any 85mm after f2.0 also works amazing.
technically speaking though, you won't go wrong with a 24-70 and a 70-200 for best coverage- those two are insanely sharp lenses.

The 70-200 f2.8 VRII will suit this requirement.
Otherwise,
a 50mm f1.8 G
Sigma 85mm f1.4 (if you want to shoot wide for DOF)
24-70 if you also want something a bit wider (as posted by JL above)

Can't go wrong with the 85mm f/1.8 that just came out, or the Sigma 1.4 version.
And as everyone else wrote, the 70-200 f/2.8 VR II is superb.

On a budget.
50mm f/1.8G

85mm f/1.8G

Both are very sharp across the frame stopped down.
If you're not on a budget and size and weight aren't a concern, the aforementioned zooms are sharp and darn convenient for quick changes in framing in the studio. (24-70 & 70-200)
