As far as I know on D700/D300 I can use it as straight lens but can't tilt or shift because it may hits the camera build in flash, that might implied to D800 as well

That's weird. I have 7D and 24/3.5 II and there are no limitations. Difficult at some angles? Yes. Possible? Definitely.
No one seems to have answers right now. Apparently Nikon has published a technical guide to the best lenses for the D800/800E (and thanks to Eric Lund for posting this over at NikonRumours). Note that the 24 PCE is NOT listed below...make of it what you will:
"With cameras like the D800E, which are suited to visuallycomplex subjects, it is important to get as much sharpnessfrom the lens as possible. Contrast at the periphery of the image can generally be increased by choosing an aperture two or three stops from the maximum, although results will varyfrom lens to lens. The D800E offers better resolution at apertures where diffraction (page 13) is not an issue. The effects of aperture may therefore be more noticeable than with the D800, and care may be required to avoid loss of definition due to diffraction."

One wonders how some of the AI lenses will do. Cantankerous Rψrslett, who was apparently in possession of a pre-production model implied that some, like the 28/2 won't make the cut. Shame, one of my favorites.

The real issue is not that Nikon did something 'wrong' with the D800 (or D700.. or D300), but that they made a couple of hugely poor design decisions with their last refresh of PC-E lens lineup.

Yakim, just wait a few months longer and a Canon equivalent camera might be announced and get the TSE 24mm II. How come all of the Canon shooters are in the Nikon Forum!?

Very sad.
Design is compromise. Something has to give. When you consider that nearly all NIkkors back to 1977 are compatible and Canon tossed away the entire FD line, it's not so horrible a decision.

Because we have pixel envy. Or more specifically the D800 has more pixels and is longer and thicker.

What Nikon is saying is that there is D4x coming for those true professionals that need to use t/s glasses.

Keeping F-mount compatibility is not the issue, not having the forward thinking to realize their future bodies would be in the D200 format and not allowing user rotatable axis are.
It's not like Nikon doesn't know how to design lenses, I think they were honestly rushed because Nikon wanted to compete with the excellent TS-E lenses. Either that or they just weren't well thought out.

Perhaps the Nikon T/S lenses are primarily for architects who don't need T/S to work independently of one another, while landscape photographers are a smaller group?
With more MPs on the new Nikon sensors (eg D800) perhaps some of the older, wider designs (28 Ai/Ais) are not as sharp toward the edge(s)...?
I wonder what happens to Canon 16-35 and 17-40 (and 24-105) when Canon releases a 35mp body such as a 1DsIV? Those lenses will show mucho weaknesses at edges then.
Meanwhile, looks like Canon has a lot of sensor catching up to do to equal Nikon/Sony.
