I am first on the list at my local camera shop.
It looks like I will have to make a "Hands On" choice between the D4 and the D800 on the 20th or 22nd of March.
Basically if the D800 can take pictures in low light, I will take it home as it uses the same battery and SDHC cards as my V1 and D7000.
The D4 is the ultimate PhotoJournelist and Sports Camera but cost twice as much,
plus, I would have to buy extra batteries and memory cards.

the question really is, is your shop "first on the list? quote<<<
That really depends on how vigilant the shop Representative is.
I received my D3 from them on the same day that the big stores (like B&H) got theirs, and at the same price.
I did not have to wait or pay for shipping, but did pay local sales tax.
Back then each store got two in the first order.
I had two about a month before the 3rd customer at B&H, Adorama or other shops got one.
There should be a few more D4 and a lot more D800 bodies in this first batch. ...Show more →
vigilance has little to do with it. its "support" both ways from each end of the supply chain. if you gotta lock on it thats good. i do believe you are correct at the distribution levels nikon is going to attempt though. so give or take a week and most will be satisfied.
What I meant by "vigilance" was to follow up on the initial order.
Just sending an email to the West Coast Nikon Rep is not enough.
He needs to verify his order and to check the current status regularly.
