Can't get an answer on the Post-Processing Forum, so will give it a try here.
When I transfer the jpeg and RAW files from my V1 to my computer, the jpegs show up as thumbnail photo icons, but the RAW files just show up as NEF icons.
I have upgraded my Camera Raw to 6.6 and am running Mac OS 10.6.8. I am using the supplied ViewNX 2 software to do the transfer.
Any idea why the RAW files do not show as photo thumbnails like the jpeg files do?
I did however find the following, which does not explain why I am having this problem:

No, as I just posted before your post, this Apple statement clearly shows the J1 & V1 RAW being supported by version 10.6.

V1 is listed under Digital Camera RAW 3.9 so iPhoto and Aperture will be able to read V1 RAW file under 10.6.8.
In the same document V1 is not listed under OS X 10.6.8 or earlier versions = no system-wide support for V1 until 10.7.3. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757
