I have been shooting more wildlife so I changed up my kit. Sold my D700 and picked up the Nikon 17-55 AFS. My kit now consists of a D7000, 17-55 AFS, 70-200 AFS VR II, 300 F4 AFS, 50 1.8G AFS, SB900, SB600 and a 1.7 TC. I still have a spare battery from the D700 and plenty of CF cards. Since the D400 is no where in sight yet I think my best option is a used D300. Are there any other options to consider?
I have a d300 and a couple d700's. I've been shooting with a D7000 for the last few days and am shocked by it's performance! IMHO it kills the d300 except for the buffer.

You can't shoot wildlife with a D700?? Really?
Oh you can and it does very well but the glass I can afford has a lot more reach on a DX body. I chose to sell my D700 while the price is still up for used ones. I may get an FX body again but right now I was using my D7000 a lot more. With the money from my D700 I was able to get the 17-55mm and still have dollars left over for the new 85mm f1.8 and possibly a D300 if I choose to get one.

Since I got the D7000 I shot with the D700 less and less. I was just wanting a second body. I thought of the D300 because I do not think it will lose as much value as a second D7000 would upon the release of the D400.
If and when the D400 comes out, the D300 price will drop like a stone. The D7000's price should be relatively unaffected as it sits in a different market sector.
If I were in your shoes, I'd go with another D7000. No extra set of controls to learn....
I don't think you'll want to go from a D7000 to a D300 as a second body. It's a great camera, no doubt I own one myself, but it's passed it's prime (in terms of buying it today, used or not). The ISO performance just doesn't compete with any of the newer mid-low cameras (D90, D3000, D5000). I say wait if you can until newer DX cameras come out... don't go backwards in choosing a second body - make your D7000 the second body when you get the newer one around the corner.
