p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 150-500 DG HSM OS

Recently was able to see a Sigma 150-500 DG HSM OS lens. Was not able to shoot any pictures but did notice focus was fast and did enjoy the light weight compared to my 500f4. I realize that the Sigma will not match the Canon 500f4 quality but at times would sure enjoy a smaller lighter lens to walk around with. Would sure appreciate any feed back from any FM member who currently are using this lens and their likes and dislikes. I would use the Sigma primarily for wildlife and birds, and also birds in flight. Also to travel especially on air lines with a smaller capacity for carrying camera gear. One other thing shoot with the 1D Mark1V.
Thank You
Tony

I asked nearly this same "line of questions" recently, and here were some of my answers...

Hi Tony,

You might want to look at this post in N&W:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1087018

I think that Imagemaster (Tony M.) could put those photos to shame with his work with the EF 100-400mm L IS.

Just my two cents...

Good Luck!,

Edd

Bigmos is the nickname for the 50-500 OS from everything I've read so that link isn't applicable.

Tony, when I went to Botswana last summer Tony Wong (tonywong88) was in our group. Tony had his Bigma with him and I know he took plenty of great images with it. Tony's also a gearhead and I'm sure he'd be able to give you good info about the lens.

Tony , as you have a 500/4 and want something a little bit more portable I would suggest you look at the 100-400 . Use a 1.4 TC if you really need a little extra reach (of course you could crop a little bit otherwise)

The only ther long lens I would look at (not quite as portable ) is the sigma 120-300/2.8 OS with a TC for added length .
Even with a 2x on it looks a very capable lens for the money

I went with David to Botswana last year with the Bigma OS (not the Bigmos = 150-500 OS). Be aware that there are a lot of different permutations of Sigma big lenses.

Out of all of them I like the Bigma OS the most, although I bought the 120-300 OS and I think it is really good as well. The 120-300 OS performed very well for me in Antarctica last year and that was comparing it to the new 400 IS 2.8 II and 70-200 IS 2.8 II. The only reason that I didn't bring the Bigma OS was that it was still under repair from Sigma Canada (12 weeks and they didn't get it done the first time :P)

I have the 150-500 OS (the lens you are asking about), 50-500, 50-500 OS and 120-300 OS. I also have the 100-400L (2008). I'd rank them wrt to optical quality as 120-300 OS first followed by 50-500 OS, 100-400L, 50-500 then the 150-500 OS as last.

For me, the Bigma OS wins as most versatile while providing very good optical quality. My only gripe with the Bigma OS was that it got pitched out of a moving vehicle on the first day of my Safari to Botswana last year with David. It shot semi OK but was decentered on the left on certain shots, and was repaired by Sigma (replacing internal elements that were chipped )

Given the choice between the 150-500 OS and the 50-500 OS, I'd pick the 50-500 OS.

Tony, how would you rate the AF speed between the 100-400 L & the 50-500 OS? I used to have the non OS 50-500 and it wasn't very useful for R/C events due to the AF speed.

I had the 150-500 OS on a 1D MKIII at the time and had good success with it stopped down to F8.0
Wide open I found the pics too soft for my liking (but the current owner loves them..)
Got a friends copy and had the same issue (softish wide open but he thought it was ok...)
At F7.1 its acceptable but F8 and after, its pretty darn good
Not bad for action shots either. I shoot off a moving Chase boat and although I only used it once, the results were pretty good. Needs a lot of light to really shine!
Overall it was a great vacation lens and for me it is a toss up between the 100-400L and 150-500

The AF is better on the 100-400L, the 50-500 OS sometimes has difficulty locking in at the long end because it goes to f6.3 rather early in the zoom range (earlier than the original Bigma, and of course the 100-400L ends up at f5.6). In order to lock focus on subjects I'd zoom out, get the AF to lock and then zoom in to shoot. This wasn't always the case, but happened in lower light conditions or if I put on a TC. In bright shooting conditions I never noticed any issues but usually that's not the best light for shooting :P

I wound up holding the front element portion/hood and using it as a push-pull zoom oftentimes on the 7D. Can't remember if I needed to do that on the 1DIV but the push pull became rather convenient anyhow.

For fast action I wouldn't pick the Bigma OS, but the Bigma works very well as a jack-of-all trades master-of-none kind of lens.

100-400L IQ is quite a head of any of the Sigma 500's. Unlike them, it is very sharp wide open. from what I've read Bigma is better lens than 150-500 and both are much closer to 465mm at infinity. Canon AF is a little slow for fast action, but I'd be surprised if the Sigma's were any better. At best they would have better OS and of course significant reach advantage although not 100mm, more like 80mm.
