I planned on purchasing the D700 but work got in the way. The purchase was put on hold until I actually had time to use it. Now that I have time I am not sure if I should stay with the plan or order the D800. Originally I planned on buying the D700 new but a photographer friend of mine is selling his as he will be ordering the D800. He is looking for $1500. Camera is in good condition but the shutter count is at 98k. I previously shot with a Canon but don't have much invested in lenses. The price isn't bad compared to what I have seen in the buy/sell forum butt he shutter count is much higher than I have seen listed.
$1500 is a great price, even with 98k shutters...........I'd jump on it, and if you don't like you could flip it for a profit.......just look in the for sale section here, tons of over priced D700's......you'd easily get $1900....

I do not need the movie mode and higher res. Those are nice to have but not required.
there you go bro that's the answer..sounds like d700 is good for you.
Rumors in the winds say that the price for a new D700 will be coming down given the D800. This will put downward pressure on used D700 prices as well.
As with all used equipment no warranty and 98K is about 1/2 the quote lifetime from Nikon.
At last check, most any repair going into Nikon is in the range of $400 to $600 so the way I look at buying used equipment is ask myself the question, would I still be happy with the price if I needed to send it in for a repair cycle. If yes, its a good deal. If no, then its worth thinking twice.
If you know the photographer and the history of use and care then that is more than you will get with most used equipment. It's no guarantee yet its better than one that has really been abused and you just don't know it. The D700 is a great camera, enjoy.
I disagree somewhat with some of the previous posters. Prices are coming down rapidly. I saw a D700 on Craigslist the other day for $1650 with less than 5000 activations.
Used D700 price should be in the 1800-2000 price range. At least until you can easily pickup a D800 those prices should hold steady. Anything under is close to half the price of the D800 which is still months away. If you need it now then jump on it. If not then keep a close eye on used prices in the next few months and more user reviews of the D800 and make your decision.

I tend to agree with this. The D800 starts shipping next month and the D800e the month after and I believe you will see a lot of good buy's on used gear coming shortly, including D700's!
buy and sell .. craiglslist .. versus a the opportunity to buy a camera that you know, so to speak ...... at a great price !! Your friend is giving you the opportunity to get into photography with a terrific full frame camera. What are you waiting for ?

I missed a local deal on CL a week or so ago for a D700 @ $1600. I inquired but it was already sold. The seller said it was like new, less than 1K clicks.
