Two unrelated questions -

With TCs, do the VR versions play better than the original AF-S and AF-S II?

What about the old AF screw drive? Anyone shoot with it?

ad 1) imho, yes
ad 2) yes, absolutely

Can't get rid of these fantastic lenses

The optical qualities have not changed Soci would imagine the iq to be similar. I shoot with the AFS II and with the TC 1.4 and 1.7 I can see almost no loss in AF speed and IQ.

Quite a collection, Andy! Glad to hear the praise for the old AF; those can be had for $2K or less these days. Ever put a Kenko 1.4 on it?

You can't put the current AFS converters on the old "screw-drive" type af lens without filing down a part of the mount. After the modification, the AFS converters will transfer the data, but the af will not work. The "standard" 1.4x for the old-style screw-drive 300 f2.8 is the TC-14b. This was a great combo in its day, but the newer AFS through VR designs are sharper.
