wow! there is a lot of information on here, I am a beginner, i just purchased my first dslr before christmas. A kind soul at work gave me some camera basics to get started. I would love some recommendations on free software that will give me a good jumpstart.

You could start with DPP, though it is limited. There is also a good deal on LR 3 today for $70 at B&H and perhaps other places.

Just Google "Free" whatever and you'll usually get a lot of hits.
i.e. "Free photo editing software"
