On 22-Jan-12 at the harbor at Pierpont Bay, Ventura, CA, USA, there were high surf warnings. The waves were in the 10-15’ range. The rock-pipers and other shorebirds were pushed off the jetty by the big waves and were easy the photograph at rather close range.

Thanks, Nancy. I'd seen American Oystercatchers on the East Coast; and we have lots of Black Oystercatchers here in the Pacific Northwest. This was my first hybrid and is an interesting bird.

Thanks, George. It could have also have been, "This is a leash free beach. The dogs will be chasing us off in half-an-hour." I'm glad we were there early.
