I think Nikon will not be producing a D400.
The D800 has a resolution close to matching the D7000 with it's DX mode. So why would they produce the D400? I believe this is one of the reasons they upped the pixel count to where it is for the D800. It's basically two cameras in one for them.

Thoughts?

A D400 would be priced at $2000 max, I would think. That's a substantially different market than what the D800 is in, even with the supposed "two cameras in one" attribute.

That would be my thought. Looks like a move similar to Canon, where they apparently have phased out the 1.3X crop - at least for now.

No, there will be a successor to the D300s. It's too large a price hole in the line-up for them not to fill. The Thailand floods threw off the time-line. I'm expecting to hear an announcement in either late March or April, delivery in the early summer.

I'm starting to think the D300s replacement maybe the D7000 after all. I would have thought a D400 would have been out by now. I hope this is wrong or I may have to get a 7D again (should have never sold it). Hopefully a D400 is in the works for later this summer or fall.

No way Nikon abandons the HUGE number of sports shooters who counted on the D300s. AF too good. DX crop factor too nice. 51 focus points. Fast frame rate with grip. Exceptional buffer. The 300s is/was a perfect complement to the D3s (or even the D700.) Serious sports shooters don't like the smaller form of the D7000. Can't believe they are going to leave that much cash on the table with an enormous hole in their line-up by forgetting about the DX bodies that don't need 36 MP of resolution but do want speed, focus accuracy and reach.

I think there WILL be a D400. The D800's 6 FPS (after you add $1000 in accessories) is still a tad slow for a high-performance sports or action camera. I could see a D400 hitting 8 FPS without needing a grip - fast enough to be substantially faster than the D800, but slow enough to not encroach on D4 territory. I could also see Nikon pulling the old "a grip magically makes your camera faster" trick and limiting the D400 to 7 FPS but giving it 9FPS with grip, and then pricing the grip at almost D800 levels (which is to say, very expensive).

A D400 sits in a nice spot for the advanced amateur / cropper pro / FX backup body for a lot of people, and as said previously the $1995 price (which it will certainly be) is in a different tier than a $2995 camera, or $4000 camera if you count the costs getting the D800 to 6 FPS..

D400 might even come in at around $1695, further differentiating the tiers, who knows.

i also think they are just delayed in announcing their high end crop camera...given the aggressive pricing on the d800 i believe they will keep the pricing around where the d300s is, well below $2k. slightly higher resolution, updates on the rest of the functionality and faster fps than the d800 and they will have yet another winner....

and i still think the odd duck in some respects is the d4, especially at the price point...either it seems too expensive, or the d800 seems to cheap..

I think that will happen eventually (probably not this year), as might an FX sensor in a D7000 body. But neither of those things is a replacement for the top end DX body, which is a sports/wildlife workhorse. I'd bet there will be something in the next few months that is essentially the D800 body platform (same batteries, grip, etc.) with either a 16mp or 24mp DX sensor.

No camera between the D7000 and D800? No way, no how. Nikon will release something to fill that gap, and an updated D300s is the perfect fit: 24 MP sensor, 8FPS, ISO performance equal to or better than D7000, semi-pro AF with decent buffer...for around $2k. There's a big market there.

I'm pretty sure the d400 will be announced later this year at 24mp and and shoot at 7 fps. The D400is a sports, wildlife and enthusiast camera and I don't see Nikon moving away from it. It would be a great combo with the d4 more pixel and greater reach in good light.

Just look at the D800, it has been floating around for 9 months prior to the announcement.

Not everyone needs add ons for $1000...I for one don't need 6FPS, I like my FX as light as possible and have never put a drive on my D700.

I cannot imagine how a consumer grade D7000 would replace the venerable DX Dx00 line. It would be so sad. This line of camera makes for a wonderful back up to the pro-bodies.
