I just got my new 17-40 this Monday. I sold my 10-22 as I just purchased a 5DmkII to complement my current 7D. Won't be using the 7D for landscapes so the 10-22 had lost its usefullness. The 17-40 is one great bargin for an L lens. (I also own 24-105, 100-400 and 100LMacro). So far stopping down to 5.6 or 8.0 which I usually am at for landscapes is creating some great sharpness even to the FF edges. F4 does suffer on the edges but I will almost never use this lens at F4 anyways and that is also the reason I chose this over the double priced 16-35L.
I remember getting my first 2 Ls in 2010 (the 24-105 and 100-400) and you immediately notice the difference in color, contrast and sharpness when coming from the kit type lenses. However, if one is shooting crop, I think that the 17-55, 15-85 and 10-22 are fairly equal. The 17-40 in my initial 2 day testing is about the same as the 10-22. My 17-40 does show a lot of CA but CA is like the simplest thing to correct as I process all my images anyways. One click and its gone in LR and one quick slide left or right in Aperture (my main DAM tool). Overall I'm happy with my choice ans only ended up paying $150 more than I sold my 10-22 for that I got 2 full years of use out of.
