Now that the D800 is out at 36 MP, here is something to think about.

Nikon D800 @ 36MP = $2,999.00

Leica S2 @ 37MP = $27,995.00

Just food for thought. Who can defend that price point ?

At first glance it looked like Nikon is more expensive, until I realized there is an extra digit there

Seriously though, besides the fact that Leica has brand value, S2 sensor is larger. More silicon is more expensive. Not 10x difference, but probably 2x-3x difference (specially given the quantities).

Holy crap is Leica that expensive? I'd get a medium format Pentax with 40MP for $9,999. But why bother now if for a 3rd we can get 36MP.

2 reasons I would get the S2 if I had the money: larger sensor, autofocus Leica lenses.

you are not buying MF for resolution only.

but leica never made sense, lot less S2, it is crop MF without upgrade path anyway.

everybody have moneys for it. you have car, you have house, it is just fact that it makes no sense for that kind of money. If you had "excess" moneys for "nonsense" things, you might get it, but then you might as well get something much better for the same money.

Jorge! Its been a while - we should catch up!

Leica should have followed up with an R10 - they could have had a killer 35mm SLR system and kept the price within reach. With all the legacy R glass they could have slowly built on what they already had, slowly adding auto-focus or IS, etc. The S2 was is a huge mistake!

That being said - I just placed my back order at B&H for the D800E (without the AA filter). I can't wait to get it. Finally medium format quality in a small durable package with Nikon AF and know how. This is going to be an awesome camera. I may have to convert some of my Leica R glass to Nikon.

Best regards,

Roland

I played with an S2 briefly once - major DROOL ..... too rich for my blood, but the view through the finder is incredible, and the Leica lens (can't remember, but it may have been the 70mm) felt like no other I've handled.

I'm glad there's really rich people to spend money on technology - I think it eventually allows the technology to reach the masses at a better price point.

Yeah but you can fit how many fx sensors inside the Lecia sensor? Jamming 36mp in 35mm formate sensor is a lot! I hope it turns out the way we are all hoping.

Not even two. It have normal Kodak sensor, just leica priced for those die hard leica fans. It is 30x45 which is even less then P30+, P65+ is 54x40

you can not put the d800 on the same league as the leica s2. the leica s lenses r out of this world. it is also true that (to me at least) the price difference between good and better only covers the last 10% or differences in quality. the old 80 20 rule. canon and nikon sell in 80+ range and leica sells in the 90+ rnage plain and simple
