p.3 #1 · Is she Americas Next Top Model?

Hi Roley

Great shots and more great shots on your website. Would just like to know your lighting setup in your (home?) studio, and also what sort of lighting you use when doing outdoor shoots.

Are all the 'studio' shots in your house, or are some of them taken at the model's house?

low budget hobby photographer that shoots for fun

You are too modest. This is great work. Everything is right here, casting, cosmetics, fashion, accesoires, the model of course, direction and production, and your photography. If this is the kind of "standard" of your work and you are capable of doing this on a regular basis you should definitely start a professional career. Ask the model to be her personal photographer and both of you will have good prospects in the future. Keep posting this kind of work and share more of this with us!

Thanks,

Peter

Thank you so much for this post. The explenation of how the shot was setup was fantastic, as I often wonder about these things. Your work is great I hope to see more of it here, or in print some day.

Hi kyeoh. thanks. I can't afford studios lol. yes, it's a home studio unfortunatley. I use a 1000W flood with softbox for soft light. and an occasional 500 or 750W V-light with reflector. Not the greatest stuff, but i make do as best i can. For outdoor I rely on natural light. never direct unless cloudy. Hope that helps?

Thanks Peter. I'd love to go pro, but I have absolutely zero clue how to break into this industry. Also, I think I look too young for people to take me seroiusly. probably why I don't get many opportunities?

I've been looking for photography positions, but nobody posts high fashion and commercial stuff. so for now, it remains a really expensive hobby.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I also have a few other 'behind the scenes' photos from a few of my past shoots too if you're interested.

Oh please share them. I am really just starting out, and I want to learn as much as I can. I don't really post much here because most of my coments would consist of "Great" or "Fantastic". So any help I can get would be fantastic.

Roley, I browsed through your site and I was impressed and inspired. You have done so well with your modest equipment it puts the rest of us with "better" cameras and stacks of L-lenses to shame. You are really no amateur - your shots are more professional than many pro shots I have seen!

Please do post more of your previous shoots and the "behind the scenes" documentary. You have marvellous control over every aspect of production which extends to creating backdrops, designing lighting, posing models, and even selecting make-up and clothes. I for one would like to learn more about how you light your model.

Now I truly believe it's the photographer, not the expensive camera and lenses one has. To be honest, when I first saw your posted images, I thought they were directly from those high fashion magazines. Now, after reading all the details you provided, I am totally impressed. You are nothing less than a PRO! I do believe you have bright future.

From a photo on the "photographer" section of your website, it looks like you're shooting with an EF 28-105/3.5-4.5 II USM... correct?

What a coincidence, I also shoot a D30 with that lens. I just wish my results were as good as yours and if I had models and such :P

All I have for lighting are two 500W super8mm camera lights that are hot enough to start a fire when used at close distances. I haven't used them indoors yet :P

Hehe! TOP quality! Just had to add my praises!
These just scream out of the screen at you. Love them. Definately start pushing your talents at people and start doing this full time. No buts!

And thanks for your insights as to how you shot them. It's always so nice to hear valuable information like this, and very generous of you.

Well done Roley
