Thank you Guys. I think I am doing the 50 1.2 Eventually the 35 and then the 85. thank you all
I am in nearly the same situation you are and I'm going for the 50 L this week too! This thread has been helpful. That minimum focusing distance is important to me, and I have an 85 1.8 that performs wonderfully already.
I wanted to finally buy myself a new Portrait lens. I have the 85 1.8 and I love the lens but hear great things about the 1.2. I have a newborn baby that I want to be able to take pictures of and also use the lens eventually for my photography business. I am torn between the 50 1.2 and the 85 1.2 I could only buy one right now. what do you recommend?
I need to buy before the 4th of this month to take advantage of the savings.
TIA
I'd keep your 85 and add the 50L to the mix. For me f/1.2 is more important @ 50mm than 85mm.

I've had the 85f1.8 for quite a while and the 50f1.4 as well.
Love the 85, but never loved the images from the 50f1.4.
I was torn between trying the 50L and the 35L.
I got a great deal on a 50L refurb from Canon.
Got it, tried it, didn't love it either. I was expecting much better images than my old 50 and 85. Maybe I expected too much.
Hope you have better luck with yours.

I didn't like the 50L at all, especially until f2. on the other hand, the 85L is my best portrait lens . I know some suggested the 35L, but most of the time i feel i need to get really close to get the portrait I want. and whats nice about 851.2 is that its super sharp wide open , which you can't say that about the other lenses.
I thought that the images were low contrast and soft at f1.2 to about f1.8. Better than the 50f1.4 at f1.4, but not much better stopped down more. I was hoping for better wide open performance since that's the reason to have it. Also, I like the images from my old school MF lenses almost as much - the Canon FL55f1.2 (bokeh not quite as good) and Minolta Rokkor 58f1.2 (not quite as sharp). For low light work I really want an AF lens in the 35 to 50mm range to go with my 85f1.8. The 50L is probably good enough, but I figured that the 35f1.4 might be sharper wide open and a better FL complement. The build quality of the 50L is excellent though.
I have both and I love both, but I must say that I get more keepers from the 50L. In fact, the 50L is the lens that is almost permanently glued to my camera. My 2nd most favoured lens is the 35L and then the 85L. They are all fantastic, but I find the 50L to be almost perfect.
Sadly I have to agree. I tried the 50/1.2 but could not like it one bit. Not sharp wide open, focus shifts when stopped down, not quick to lock AF.... well, at least the bokeh was good. But really, is this an L prime? Yikes.
thank you. I bought the 50L when I finish setting up the website and business maybe I will be able to also afford the 85L in the future. trying to save up for that new camera being release soon.
