Was wondering if this is normal for this ball head? I am referring to the PC-36NS ball head.
I recently got a brand new model (never touched or pulled out of the bag) and then sold it to an FMer here because I realized I needed a geared head for the type of work I am going to be doing instead.
The buyer claims that the ball head is oozing grease and that "The second issue is the panoramic knob is not working properly, and require extra tighten to lock the base"
So just wondering if other photoclam ball head users have experienced these problems?
The grease now is completely gone , but the panning knob still reguired extra tightening. Another issue today was the ball head wasn't fluid as the first day. I set the friction knob to zero yet it felt like the friction was at 1. The ball head doea locked down very solid.
I purchased and returned the same ball head from Kerry from Reallybigcameras and I am suprise at the qc different since i have heard nothing but great reviews.
My option now is to return it to korea in exchange for a new one but it might takesometime before I get another. Do you know of any other options ?
the grease issue is a big nothing. occasionally my markins M10 (after a internals repack and such about 5 years ago) still throws some grease out of the base every now and then. on the Markins the pan base lock will slide under heavy torque. but as a pan lock it performs it job.
even my RRS heads spit a little grease out the bottom every now and then too.
I have come across 2 PC-36n and both had grease oozing from the pan base. Well it wasn't really oozing but the grease was loosely applied in the factory so they were everywhere to begin with. The grease also dissolved the screen printing so I had to remove the base and cleaned them off asap.
As to the initial ball tension, it can be reset by removing the main knob. Mine was too loose so I reset the initial tension to something tighter to my liking. The pan knob feels the same as my old AS B1, but it's hard to describe how tight is too tight in words. The first thing is to tighten the pan base screws if they were loose.
The grease now dissappeared and a friend cleaned the ball and now very fluid again. How do you adjust the pan knob to your liking. I find mine to be a bit loose therefore required extra tighten to lock ?
The main knob can be adjusted, the pan knob cannot. The pan lock is based on friction so it doesn't have to be dead tight to hold the panning. It works the same way the AS B1 does.
