I love the 35 field of view and ideally would like the Canon 35 1.4L but I really don't want to sell the Contax and it seems a bit ridiculous to have two expensive lenses of exactly the same focal length and aperture.
I'm currently thinking about a 35 f2 for about £217 new from Jessops, or a 2nd hand Canon or Sigma 50 1.4. Are there any others which would work well in low light which would be similar in image quality to what I already have? Suggestions please!
Sigma 85 f/1.4 as you have a 58 f/1.2. Otherwise I know it's heavy, but the 70-200 f/2.8L IS mk II is prime like IMO. It's amazingly sharp and the best FL range IMO for FF.
For that particular application, I personally prefer the 35mm focal length. The 35L is an excellent performer, and while I haven't owned the C/Y Zeiss 35/1.4, I've read many times that the 35L renders very similar images to it.
You didn't rule out zooms specifically, did you? I would go with 24-70L as my first choice and 24-105L as my second choice for an all-around "social" AF lens.
Otherwise, get the EF 35/2 as you are thinking. But it is terribly limited.
A prime would be preferred. id want the smallest and cheapest ideally but I still want the best image quality which is what is pushing me away from the 35f2. I will try the 35l if I can find a good deal and decide what to do with my Contax later
It is very unclear to me what you are trying to accomplish with your new purchase. If you like the current 35mm lens, use that. If it isn't useful to you, sell it and get something else.
I hope you aren't hanging on to a 35mm lens that you don't find especially useful because the words "Contax" and "Zeiss" appear on the product. If so, sell it to someone else who places greater value on the words than on the functionality of the lens and use the proceeds to purchase a lens that works great, produces fine image quality, and which will be more functional for your intended use.
My two cents worth...

Dan, I believe the OP is looking for an AF lens in that focal length, which he likes.
