Chance encounter with a good looking bridge when I was far too early for a meeting.

C&C very welcome as ever.

Sweet shot.
Would look cool, too, as a setting for shooting some portraits. A lot of possibilities here.

Thanks Tim,
You're right - it has great possibilities as a setting for working with models. The only problem would be finding a quiet time! The shot above was taken at about 7:15am just as the sun was rising - even then there was a steady trickle of people walking to their offices. Later in the day, it gets very busy

Most very cool!
Nice perspective, careful work with symmetry.
I think it needs some sharpening. I'd be aggressive on masked (edge) sharpening.
Where is this and what it the name of the bridge?
EXIF?

Thanks Scott,
Good point about the sharpening - I have a tendency to overcook sharpening sometimes so I sometimes err on the side of caution - I'll do some work on it.

The shot was taken at Salford Quays in NW England, UK - a redeveloped industrial dockland area which now has swanky apartments, offices and a theatre:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=salford+quays&hl=en&ll=53.46981,-2.289877&spn=0.048229,0.111666&sll=53.39706,-2.560411&sspn=0.012078,0.027916&hq=salford+quays&radius=15000&t=m&z=14

I'm not sure of the bridge's name - it's a lift bridge that jacks itself up on four pylons to let ships pass underneath. There are a couple more shots of it in my flickr.

With regards to the EXIF, I guess I should own up and admit that it was just taken with my compact (always with me, unlike my 5D) - a Panasonic DMC-LX3. It's got a good, fast, Leica lens and shoots raw - punches well above its weight. For what it's worth, the basic exif is below

Thanks.
Nice to have a compact camera. Cant take a picture without a camera, so more opportunities this way!
I guess my question is could you have bumped the ISO for a faster shutter speed and still get a clean enough shot? Not that an image like this cant tolerate some noise or added grain to cover some noise.

Good points again Scott - I've got a couple of custom AE settings on the LX3 which pin the ISO to certain ranges. Looking at this shot, I had it on my 'up to 200' setting. If I'd thought more about it, I should have shot manual and set the ISO a little higher (it's fairly clean up to 800 but as you say, a little grain on this shot wouldn't necessarily be detrimental).

I was too focussed on grabbing a shot when the bridge was empty - should have put more thought into the exposure

That is quite a shot of that bridge. makes you feel like you will be squashed together when you get to the middle.
Very good photography

Great composition of the bridge, a lower angle could have been interesting as well. The dark sky works well with this. adds that drama.

Perfect setting. The sky looks ominous, and that bridge has wonderful architecture.

As suggested I've tweaked the sharpening and added a touch of NR to bring down some of the noise in the sky (the LX3 tends to blow the blue channel and before conversion, the sky in this shot had a very blue tinge to it).

cheers
Matt
