Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II mkII, 53 confirmed shutter clicks on NEW SHUTTER, DC coupler, 2 batteries, original strap
16.7 MP Full Frame, 100% cleaned & updated & functional from Canon, 54 pictures
Hi,
I'm selling various 1ds bodies to help fund an eventual upgrade to newer camera equipment. I am not the original owner of this body, but I can confirm that the camera functions to Canon specifications.
It is important to me that the equipment I am using and selling functions correctly and is represented accurately. This was my primary body (and third 1ds mkII!), which I purchased used in September 2011. I hand carried this body to Canon's Factory Service Center, in Irvine CA, to have it reviewed and calibrated if necessary in December 2011.
Canon told me that because of the shutter count (about 296k shots), they would need to replace the shutter, in case of any warranty claims during the 6 month warranty repair period.
The shutter was working perfectly fine, with no signs of failure at fast shutter speeds, but I elected to have the shutter replaced regardless.
In December, Canon replaced the shutter, charge unit, and some mirror parts. I did not use this body again, because I was using different backup bodies.
In the middle of January, I noticed that there was a crack in the vertical portrait plastic, which Canon did not find during the December repair.
Canon replaced this part in January (it is called the "Vertical dial assembly", and at the same time I asked them to replace the rear LCD window, because of scratches.
In addition, Canon also replaced the bottom rubber grip, and I replaced the eyecup.
Both the shutter replacement and vertical dial assembly includes a six month warranty by Canon. Canon advised me that the warranty follows the camera, not the owner, and I will include a copy of both repair reports for the buyer.
I also asked Canon to advise the shutter count and mirror box count after the second repair. They connected the camera to the Firewire port, ran some diagnostic software, and manually wrote down the number of shutter and mirror box clicks on the repair report.
See below for the picture of the original Canon repair report, and below for the counts:
The shutter count was 52. Yes, fifty-two.
The mirror box count was 296,775
The 1ds mkII shutter is rated to 200,000 shots, although I can confirm that this 1ds mkII shutter did work correctly at 296k shots.
The 1ds mkII mirror box is rated to 400,000 shots (double the shutter count).
Both of these data points mean that this camera body has at least another 103,220 shots left on the rated mirror box.
I have taken just ONE additional picture with this camera after asking Canon to verify the shutter count. The last frame taken with this body was number XU8M0003 (you can see that the shot count was reset by Canon after the shutter replacement).
This was to check the sensor for dust after it was cleaned by Canon, and to verify Windows program shutter count, such as 1D Count and online shutter count (such as http://www.camerashuttercount.com and http://www.myshuttercount.com/) tools. You can see that the 3rd-party tools do NOT match Canon's count.
Therefore, this camera body has 53 shutter clicks on it, on the new shutter, which are verified by Canon. See below for screen captures of 1D Count and online shutter count tools. You can see that the 3rd-party tools do NOT match Canon's count; Canon's count is 53, and 1dcount/Camera Shutter Count is 291,306. I think maybe the third-party tools check the mirror box count, and not the shutter box count. Either way, Canon's count should be considered the authority.
Cosmetic and functional condition:
Because this camera was serviced by Canon, and not a third party, the functional condition is 100%. For all intents and purposes, the camera has been returned to the original factory functionality, all operations checked by Canon, and "Product functions were confirmed", with a brand-new shutter and vertical dial assembly.
Please see below for as much detail as I am able to describe and show in the pictures, taken with my Canon SD750 point and shoot:
- The body cap fits tightly
- The eyecup fits correctly, and has no cuts or cracks on it.
- There are no bent pins on the CF socket. Images can be written to and read from the CF and SD card sockets as expected.
- There are NO scratches on the rear plastic LCD cover, because the LCD cover is new. There is NO dust behind the LCD plastic cover.
- There are a few hairline scratches on the top LCD display.
- There are a few very very very small dust spots in the viewfinder. None of these affect the image quality, since they are not in the image path.
- The mirror is very clean, as expected from being cleaned by Canon.
- There are no scratches on the sensor.
- There are about six very small dust spots on the sensor in the middle lefthand side of the frame, upper lefthand side of the frame, and upper righthand side of the frame, in spite of the sensor being cleaned by Canon. See below for the F22 shot, taken into an semi-overcast sky with clouds. (In addition, it has been my experience that it is normal that a DSLR, even if having been recently cleaned, can show dust on the sensor or viewfinder, especially after being shipped or transported, so please expect that the sensor and viewfinder could show some dust, after you receive it.)
There are noticeable scuffs and scratches and paint wear on the camera, as expected. None of these affect image quality. Nonetheless, I am listing as many as I can observe for your reference, and please see below for more detailed pictures:
- Paint wear, on the front bottom right and right rear, around the battery compartment.
- Scuffs and paint wear above the front lens mount, to the top right of the "Canon" logo
- Scuff and scratch on the plastic area of the vertical portrait shutter release
- Paint wear around the shutter release button and right body strap mount
- Paint wear in the lower front lefthand side of the camera, close to the vertical portrait shutter release and rubber front grip
- Small scuffs on the bottom of the tripod mount
- Paint wear close to the "light" button on the top of the camera, and close to the WB button on the rear of the body
- Paint wear around the shutter release button
- Paint wear on the top of the body, above the "Canon" logo, to either side of and in front of the flash hotshoe
- Paint wear on the flash hotshoe, and close to the rear microphone
- Nick and paint wear on the top left and top left front side of the body, and on the left body strap mount
- All buttons, levers, and switches are clearly legible, and function as expected. There is some wear on the blue zoom in and out icons on the rear vertical portrait grip.
- The rubber grips are clean, as per the below pictures, and are firmly attached to the body.
- The latest firmware 1.1.6 is installed
- I have reset the camera back to the factory default settings, using EOS Utility 2.8.1, and Mac OS X 10.7.2, with a FireWire 800 to 9 pin to 4 pin cable. See above for a picture of these default settings.
From the below pictures, the sensor dust picture was taken with a Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L lens, ISO100, manual focus set to infinity, in Av mode, and at F22 aperture.
Please let me know if you would like the full resolution picture for sensor dust analysis.
The camera RAW file size is about 15mb, and jpg file size with high quality is about 9mb. This can vary depending on the scene, ISO, and other factors.
The full camera body serial number is: 3203xx
The camera internal body serial number (inside the battery compartment) is: OT0606
Based on the Date Code Analysis, this camera was manufactured in June 2005, in Oita, Japan.
If you are interested in a full-frame camera, you are aware what type of performance the 1ds Mark II can achieve with a full frame sensor, and the professional features it has: durability, weather sealing, 45 point autofocus, F/8 autofocus capability with lens extenders, and very high customization ability.
As a 1D body, what personally impresses me the most about this camera is the autofocus speed, and the build quality.
The camera was manufactured in Japan, and the materials and build quality really shows, with magnesium alloy body material and environmental seals all around, including around the flash storage and battery compartment.

Parts that are included in this sale:
- The Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II body, with 53 original shutter actuations on the second shutter, verified by Canon. The shutter is rated by Canon to 200,000 actuations, so this is a fraction of the rated shutter life. The Canon body part number is DS126081, and the serial number is 3203xx. The camera is currently registered under my CPS account, and I will remove the registration before shipping it to the buyer. In addition, the camera will also be reset to default factory settings with EOS Utility, and time set to Pacific time based on my computer.
- Canon NC-E2 dual battery charger, which functions as expected, and is able to discharge (refresh) and re-charge the batteries, and AC power cable.
- Quantity two (2) Canon original NP-E3 batteries with battery covers.
The batteries both have "OV" and "OX"" date codes, which, based on the Date Code Analysis, means they were manufactured in 2007 and 2009, respectively, in Oita, Japan.
Other replacement aftermarket batteries are available on amazon.com.
- DC coupler, part number DC-E1. The AC adapter, part number PA-V16, to power the camera from an AC source is not included, but can be purchased from Canon Parts at 866-481-2569, and are $59.24 each.
- Original Canon Wide Strap L5, which shows signs of normal use.
- New 6 foot USB cable (for USB Direct Print), new 6 foot FireWire 400 8 pin to 4 pin cable, and new 6 foot FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. (The FireWire cables are used to set the personal functions, owner name, and date and time on the camera, and I've included both FW400 and FW800 versions, depending on what FireWire port you have on your personal computer).
