Steven- The smoke makes for an excellent image.
I'd prefer blacker blacks to emphasize the whiteness of the smoke- but you already know I'm a contrast freak, so that won't come as news .
And thanks for the admission that it's not fog. I lived in nearby Jerome for two winters, and never saw much fog in that little valley- so I'd have had trouble swallowing if you hadn't explained.
Controlled burns in western forests usually make sense- they're just painful to see in otherwise beautiful country. At least you took pictorial advantage of the situation (and probably drove to Grand Canyon later the same day ).
