I have been on this forum for a month or two now reading and have really enjoyed the different opinions.I have now purchased a Canon 1Ds camera. I was interested in going FF. My old setup was a Pentax. I have no lens at this time and wanted to buy one to get started. I want to shoot family candids, potraits and the family sports. I want to have a lens to shoot inside and outside. I was thinking a price range of under $1000. Was wondering if anyone had some suggestions.
I would want a good all around zoom first, and recomend the Canon 24-105 f4 L zoom. It is not perfect, but is serves many needs, and its price point is right about where you mentioned. It will also serve you well in the long term if you get a higher resolution camera some day. Once you get a feel for your other lens needs, you can branch out to other zooms or to primes as you build up a collection of lenses.
within your budget I would suggest the following setup
1) 35 f2 : superb all around lens $300
2) 85 f1.8 : perfect for portraits $325 & indoor sports
3) 70-200 F4 non IS or 70-300 f5.6 IS : outdoor sports
I'd start with 70-200L f2.8 non-IS for yours sports, can be had for under $900 with some careful watching of the forums. Add a $100 nifty fifty for your candid portraits and go from there.
