I have been going through images from our 07 trip to Italy. I did not have my tripod (mistake!), so all of the shots are hand held. And it rained most of the time, but I loved the textures it provided.

That's a interesting cropped image, unlike most photos of the Colosseum. It looks very good on my monitor with a nice broad tonal range and excellent sharpness.
I've been doing exactly what you're doing -- going through old images and trying B&W conversions -- and, coincidentally, I've been working on some photos from our 08 trip to Italy! Posted a couple from Pompeii a day or two ago.
